Open Defecation Soars Due to Toilet Shortages in Kisoro

KISORO – Residents in Kisoro district have developed a concerning practice of resorting to open spaces, including corridors, sanitary lanes, and bushes, for relieving themselves, primarily due to the lack of sufficient toilet facilities.

This has given rise to a substantial public health issue that looms over the district. A survey carried out by our reporter highlights that a significant number of locals are involved in open defecation, resulting in the pollution of essential water sources like springs, shallow wells, and rivers resources vital to the well-being of the community.

Concerned residents that include Alex Habyarimana from Gasiza ward in Kisoro Municipality, Benon Maniraguha from Bunagana town council, and Eliab Ndagizimana from Rutare parish, Chahi Sub County, Kisoro District, attest to witnessing both men and women openly defecating along corridors and in nearby bushes.

The Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Robert Tukamuhebwa, acknowledges the shortage of toilets and the prevalent practice of open defecation. Tukamuhebwa, however, attributes the challenge to poverty and calls for collaborative efforts to eradicate open defecation.
