Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the deaths of two men following a fatal stabbing and a subsequent mob attack in Buyanja Sub-county.
The deceased have been identified as Karubakanga Emmanuel, 19, and Akandwanaho Justus, 25. According to the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, the incident occurred on Wednesay at Nyakasharara Cell, Rubanga South Parish in Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
Preliminary police findings indicate that Karubakanga allegedly picked a quarrel with Akandwanaho at the trading centre. During the confrontation, Akandwanaho reportedly stabbed Karubakanga in the chest with a knife, killing him instantly.
Shortly after the incident, angry residents allegedly took the law into their own hands and attacked Akandwanaho, beating him to death on suspicion of committing the murder.
Police have condemned the mob justice, warning members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.
“We condemn the act of taking the law into their own hands when we have a functioning justice system in place. Members of the public should always trust the justice system established by law,” SP Tumushime said.
Tumushime appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigations to report to the nearest police station, assuring the public that the identities of informants will be kept confidential.
