David Muhumuza, an aspirant for the Mwenge County North parliamentary seat in Kyenjojo District, has officially withdrawn from the 2026–2031 race, citing the need to promote unity and cohesion within the constituency.

In a formal letter to the Kyenjojo District Registrar of the Independent Electoral Commission dated 9th December 2025, Muhumuza stated that the decision followed careful consideration.

He emphasized that his withdrawal was motivated by a desire to uphold harmony within the constituency and the wider region.

“This decision has been undertaken out of my free will without any duress, intimidation, or undue influence,” Muhumuza said.

Muhumuza had earlier been duly nominated to contest for the Member of Parliament seat for Mwenge County North. His withdrawal now opens up the race as the district prepares for the 2026 General Election.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, expressed gratitude following weeks of discussions that led to Muhumuza stepping down. Muhumuza had been standing as an independent candidate, and his withdrawal now favors the NRM candidate, Hon. Akuguzibwe Lawrence.

“This decision will go a long way in easing tensions among supporters in the constituency. I want to thank Hon. Muhumuza for this gesture and Omukama Owobusobozi Bisaka for the guidance offered in resolving this matter,” Tayebwa said.

He added that the NRM family is large and inclusive, assuring that Muhumuza will continue to serve the nation through other avenues.
