Police in Kasese District are investigating circumstances under which a 78-year-old woman was found dead in an apparent suicide by hanging.
The deceased has been identified as Mbambu Susana, a peasant and resident of Mumbuzi Cell, Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality.
According to police, the incident was reported on Monday at about 6:21am after the area chairperson of Mumbuzi Cell, Mbambu Annet Kule, received a telephone call informing her that Susana had allegedly hanged herself in her bedroom.
Police said the deceased had been staying with her daughter, Mbambu Margo, who is married to Thembo Expedito Mwirima.
Kimbesa Nason, 37, an area defence member, subsequently reported the matter at Kasese Police Station for further management.
A team of homicide detectives visited the scene and documented it with the help of scene-of-crime officers.
Police said Susana was found hanging by a piece of cloth in a single-room structure divided into a shop and a bedroom.
Her body was retrieved and conveyed to Kasese Municipal Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate said the motive behind the suspected suicide had not yet been established.
He urged members of the public experiencing emotional distress or other challenges to seek help and share their grievances with trusted people or relevant authorities rather than resorting to suicide.
Police said inquiries into the incident are ongoing and a postmortem report will be obtained to help establish the cause of death.
