The Senior Commissioner of Prisons for Cooperation and Corporate Affairs and Service Spokesperson, Frank Baine, has urged sportsmen and women in the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) to safeguard the image and values of the institution both on and off the field.
Addressing the athletes, Baine reminded them that every player is an ambassador of the Prisons Service, representing its values of patriotism, professionalism, integrity, oneness, hard work, and discipline.
He commended the remarkable growth of sports within the Service, noting that UPS teams have gained national and international recognition, a testament to the players’ talent and commitment.
Citing the 1995 Constitution of Uganda, Baine emphasized the duty of every citizen to be patriotic, loyal, and supportive of national development. He called on the players to promote unity and harmony, respect the rule of law, and contribute positively to their families and communities.
Baine also encouraged the athletes to embrace a culture of saving and personal development, advising them to engage in income-generating ventures beyond their regular salaries.
He underscored the value of a career in the Uganda Prisons Service, describing it as a rewarding and secure profession that offers stable salaries, pension, and gratuity after retirement.
He reminded the sportsmen and women that while sports play an important role in their lives, there is life beyond active competition and being part of the Service ensures sustained employment and long-term welfare.
The Uganda Prisons Service currently boasts of ten competitive sports teams, participating in disciplines such as woodball, darts, volleyball, taekwondo, netball, handball, athletics, and football, represented by Maroons FC and She Maroons FC.
