Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander in a successful operation in the Lower Shabelle region.
The militant leader, Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, widely regarded as the general commander of Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, was eliminated on 14 September 2025 during an ambush near Buulomareer.
Sector One Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, commended the troops at Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base (FOB) for “dealing a decisive blow against Al-Shabaab.”
He confirmed that the operation also led to the recovery of key items, including a pistol with three loaded magazines, a porch, binoculars, and two mobile phones.
Brig Gen Ssemwanga reassured soldiers that AUSSOM, UPDF leadership, and international partners remain committed to dismantling Al-Shabaab networks and restoring lasting stability in Somalia.
Maj David Ogweng, commander of Buulo Mareer FOB, thanked Brig Gen Ssemwanga for his guidance and support, which he said enabled the troops to accomplish their mission.
He reaffirmed his forces’ determination to ensure peace, security, and stability in Somalia.
During his field visit, Brig Gen Ssemwanga also inspected Forward Operating Bases in Quoryoley and Goloweyn to assess operational readiness and troop welfare.
He was accompanied by Lt Col Justus Magyembe, Contingent Logistics and Engineering Commander, along with commanders responsible for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Women’s Affairs.
