Police in Rubanda District have recovered the body of a 31-year-old man that was found on Christmas Eve in Kataraga Cell, Bunyonyi Ward, Hamuhambo Town Council.
The deceased has been identified as Nelson Nasasira, a casual labourer and resident of Kyarujumba Cell, Bunyonyi Ward in Hamuhambo Town Council, Rubanda District.
According to a police statement, on Saturday evening at about 8:00 p.m., Nasasira was reportedly called by his friend, only identified as Justus, from the same area, and the two agreed to go and burn charcoal in Kataraga Cell, a short distance from Hamuhambo Town Centre. Nasasira never returned home thereafter.
Police say that the following day, his wife, Nahurira Saviour, reported the matter to the area chairperson and continued searching for her husband, but her efforts were unsuccessful.
On Wednesday morning (24/12/2025), Nasasira’s brother, Tayebwa Bright, returned home and learned of the disappearance. He later approached Baram, a brother to Justus, and requested him to guide him to the location where the two had allegedly gone to burn charcoal.
Upon arrival at the site, they noticed a foul smell and flies around a heap of logs and dry eucalyptus branches. They immediately alerted local leaders, who visited the scene and discovered the body concealed under tree branches. Bunyonyi Police were subsequently notified.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and said a murder case file has been opened at Rubanda Police Station. He added that a team of officers led by the District CID Officer, D/ASP Kabogoza Fatina, together with the District Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), responded to the scene, which was examined and documented.
He noted that statements were recorded from witnesses, and the body was conveyed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Maate further noted that the whereabouts of Justus, who was last seen with the deceased, remain unknown, and police investigations are ongoing.
