The Archbishop of Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, on Wednesday visited the Uganda Martyrs’ Anglican Site in Namugongo to assess the readiness of Uganda Christian University (UCU) to host this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations.
Uganda Christian University was mandated by the House of Bishops to organize this year’s celebrations on behalf of Church of Uganda.
Since taking on the responsibility, the university has undertaken several major improvements at the site, focusing on security and safety, beautification, branding, sanitation, and water supply.
Among the notable developments are the construction and renovation of modern toilet facilities to cater for thousands of pilgrims, establishment of walkways, restoration of the green environment, reconstruction of sections of the collapsed perimeter wall to enhance security, drilling and installation of a solar-powered water supply system, renovation of several buildings, and a general clean-up of the site.
However, due to the current public health situation, this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations will be conducted scientifically and in accordance with the Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
According to Church of Uganda, the celebrations will be organized as follows:
- The National Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations will be held at the Uganda Martyrs’ Anglican Site in Namugongo strictly by invitation, with attendance at the main service limited in line with Ministry of Health guidelines.
- All dioceses are encouraged to commemorate Martyrs’ Day in their respective parishes across the province.
- The official Martyrs’ Day liturgy will be shared through diocesan secretaries in due course.
Archbishop Kaziimba has further tasked Uganda Christian University with continuing preparations for this year’s scientific celebrations and coordinating next year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day commemorations. The next cluster of organizers will be announced during next year’s celebrations.
Archbishop Kaziimba has urged Christians and members of the public to continue observing Ministry of Health SOPs to safeguard public health and ensure the safety and well-being of all.
