Police in Kanungu District have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 78-year-old man who was allegedly strangled at his home in Kirima Sub-county.
The deceased, identified as Godfrey Tumwesigye, was a resident of Nyarwemarira Village, Rubimbwa Parish in Kanungu District.
According to police, Tumwesigye had previously been married to four wives, all of whom reportedly lived separately in their respective homes following misunderstandings with him. Police said the elderly man later acquired land in another area where he built a house and began living alone.
Police revealed that Tumwesigye’s daughter, identified as Florence Kyomuhendo, had also constructed a house on the same piece of land, where she lived with her children while taking care of her father.
On Tuesday evening, Tumwesigye was in good health and was served food by one of his grandchildren before retiring for the night.
However, tragedy struck the following morning. On Wednesday at around 7:00 a.m., the grandchild reportedly went to assist the deceased in taking goats out for grazing but found him lying dead outside his house.
The child immediately alerted his mother, who responded to the scene before the matter was reported to Kirima Police Station.
A district police team later visited the scene with a police sniffer dog to aid investigations. However, police said the scene of crime had already been tampered with, limiting the effectiveness of the canine operation.
The body was retrieved and taken to Kanungu Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
ASP Elly Maate, the outgoing Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Tumwesigye’s death are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
