The Uganda Prisons Service has announced a significant promotion exercise involving 4,996 junior officers, marking one of the largest single advancement approvals in recent years.
The promotions, approved by the 36th Prisons Council and announced by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, see officers elevated from various ranks up to Warder and Wardress levels, in recognition of their dedication, discipline, and professional service.
According to the breakdown, 139 officers have been promoted to Principal Officer I, while 196 have advanced to Principal Officer II. A further 201 officers were elevated to Chief Warder/Wardress I, 204 to Chief Warder/Wardress II, and 432 to Chief Warder/Wardress III.
At the lower ranks, 1,512 officers have been promoted to Sergeant Warder/Wardress, 633 to Corporal Warder/Wardress, and the largest group, 1,679 officers, to Lance Corporal Warder/Wardress.
Dr. Byabashaija congratulated the officers on their well-earned career progression, emphasizing that their commitment to duty and professionalism had been duly recognized.
He encouraged them to maintain high standards of conduct as they take on greater responsibilities within the service.
“These promotions are a reflection of hard work, discipline, and commitment to service delivery. I urge all officers to continue upholding professionalism in the execution of their duties,” he said.

In a Press statement issued on Wednesday, Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons in charge of Cooperation and Corporate Affairs and Service Spokesperson, explained that the promotions were guided by available vacancies within the established Prisons structure.
He further noted that officers who were not promoted in this cycle should remain patient, as they will be considered in future promotion rounds.
