Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two people in Kicwamba Cell, Ibanda Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County.
The incident occurred on Saturday at around 5:00 PM. The deceased have been identified as Kenema Dinavence, a 43-year-old woman, and Byamugisha John, a 41-year-old man, both residents of the same village.
According to police reports, Kenema had just returned home from attending a burial in Nyarushanje. As she rested in her compound, her neighbor, Byamugisha, allegedly crossed the road armed with a panga and attacked her, inflicting multiple cuts to her head, neck, and shoulder. She died instantly.
After the attack, Byamugisha reportedly returned to his home. When the area LC1 chairperson confronted him, Byamugisha allegedly admitted to the killing. However, before the chairperson could secure the suspected murder weapon and hand him over to police, enraged residents overpowered and lynched him on the spot.
Police from Rubabo responded to the scene and notified Rukungiri Central Police Station. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that statements were recorded from key witnesses, postmortem examinations were conducted at the scene, and the bodies were handed over to their families for burial.
