The Rubanda West Member of Parliament, Hon. Kamuntu Mwongyera Moses, has announced that he will contest as an independent candidate in the forthcoming general elections after losing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primary.
Kamuntu made the declaration following his defeat to Bruce Baraba Kabaasa, who polled 26,302 votes against Kamuntu’s 24,576.
Addressing the media on Monday, Kamuntu cited incidents of harassment and intimidation targeting his supporters, particularly in Bufundi Sub-county, where Kabaasa secured a lead of over 3,000 votes.
He further alleged that the voting process in Bufundi was marred by religious bias.
In Rubanda East County, another NRM contender, Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema, has rejected the primary election results after losing to the incumbent MP and State Minister of Finance (General Duties), Hon. Henry Ariganyira Musasizi.
Minister Musasizi was declared winner with 22,538 votes, while Jogo trailed with 18,832.
Biryabarema decried what he called widespread electoral malpractice, including voter bribery, intimidation, and the alleged use of firearms.
He cited an incident at Bubaare Sub-county headquarters where gunfire reportedly broke out as Musasizi arrived with his security detail.
Biryabarema has since refused to concede and is calling on the NRM Secretariat to investigate and take action over the alleged irregularities.
