According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Defence Force, Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye, Gen Kayihura and the other 109 Generals have officially retired from the Army.

On June 13th, 2018, Gen. Kayihura was dramatically arrested by the army while reportedly attempting to flee the country through a game park in the Southwest Part of Uganda.

Later, on August 24th, 2018, Gen Kayihura was presented before the CGM, and charges related to his failure to protect war material by issuing arms to unauthorized persons, including Boda-Boda 2010 members led by Abdallah Kitatta between 2010 and 2018, were brought against him.

The army further accused the General of aiding and abetting kidnappings, repatriating Rwandan exiles and refugees, and transporting Ugandan citizens to Rwanda between 2012 and 2016. He denied the charges and, after 76 days in military custody, he was released on bail, a status he maintained until his official retirement.

According to Brig Gen Kulayigye, out of the 109 retired officers, 11 are Generals, and 99 are Senior Officers ranging from the rank of Major to Colonel.

He expressed his appreciation for the services rendered by these officers to their country while in active service and wished them good luck in their retirement.
