The Minister for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, has directed the Uganda Police Force to launch a 100-day operation targeting commuter taxis operating in a dangerous mechanical condition (DMC) within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The operation, which starts on Monday, August 24, will see taxis deemed to be in dangerous mechanical condition barred from operating in the metropolitan area.
Minister Byamukama said the operation will particularly target dilapidated 14-seater commuter taxis commonly known as “Ganyegenya,” which he said pose a danger to passengers and other road users.
“Our roads must not become death traps because of poorly maintained vehicles,” Byamukama said.
He said public transport vehicles must be safe, roadworthy and fit for purpose, stressing that the government has a responsibility to protect the lives of Ugandans using public transport.
Minister Byamukama directed police to enforce the operation for 100 days as part of efforts to improve road safety and ensure that only mechanically sound vehicles are allowed to carry passengers.
“Public transport must be safe, roadworthy and fit for purpose. We owe Ugandans nothing less,” he said.
