According to Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza, both Besigye and Mukaaku failed to appear in court for the second time to face trial on charges of inciting violence. The arrest warrant was issued following a request by the prosecution. It is alleged that on June 14th, 2022, in Kikuubo, Shauriyako Parish, Kampala City, Besigye and Mukaaku made statements inciting violence and damage to property during a protest against escalating commodity prices.

Just learned of the Court hearing this morning! Facing countless trumped-up charges, I’ve never shied away from the truth. I am prepared to comply with the arrest order, as required – Besigye Responded

Initially, both Besigye and Mukaaku were granted bail and were required to appear in court as ordered. However, they were absent during the recent court session. State Attorney Ivan Kyazze informed the court that despite bringing witnesses from far, Besigye and Mukaaku did not show up and have been inconsistent in their appearances, which has hindered a speedy trial.

Magistrate Muhumuza clarified that Besigye and Mukaaku attended court in May but missed subsequent sessions, leading the court to issue a warrant of arrest and criminal summons against their sureties.

It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold as the court proceeds with the case and the authorities attempt to execute the arrest warrant.
