Several kiosks near Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale Municipality have been demolished following complaints from hospital administrators who said the structures had become a hideout for criminals.
The Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Godfrey Nyakahuma, who also chairs the District Security Committee, confirmed the demolition and said the action was taken after a one-month ultimatum issued by the District Security Committee and Kabale Municipal Council expired.
According to RDC Nyakahuma, the kiosks had become bars selling alcohol to patient attendants, were being used to store stolen medicine, and had become a general security risk. They also caused congestion at the hospital gate.
He further noted that the kiosks lacked basic sanitation facilities, such as toilets, making them non-compliant with the Public Health Act. He added that the Kabale Municipal Council had not issued licenses to kiosk operators for the past two years.
RDC Nyakahuma emphasized that the kiosk operators were illegally occupying hospital land and that their constructions had not been approved by the Kabale Municipal Council, in violation of the Urban Authorities Act.
