The legal community in Kabale District is mourning the death of retired Supreme Court Judge Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, while celebrating his enduring impact on Uganda’s legal and constitutional development.
Prof. Kanyeihamba, who passed away on Monday at Nakasero Hospital, is being remembered as a towering legal scholar, fearless jurist, and statesman. His influence was instrumental in shaping Uganda’s 1995 Constitution, where he served as chairperson of the Legal Committee during the Constituent Assembly.
His Worship, Julius Mutabazi, Kabale’s Principal Chief Magistrate, hailed him as a defender of constitutionalism whose writings, particularly the Constitutional History of Uganda, continue to guide legal education and practice.

Retired Magistrate Sunday Ben Dancun noted Kanyeihamba’s courage in landmark decisions, especially his dissent in the 2006 Presidential Election petition, which remains a defining moment in Uganda’s judicial history.
