More than 300 supporters of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Kitgum Municipality.
The defectors officially handed over their FDC membership cards to the Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, on Friday, May 9, 2025, during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations held at Kitgum Public Primary School playground.
Dressed in NRM-branded T-shirts, the defectors including some journalists previously affiliated with FDC symbolized their allegiance to the ruling party. They pledged to support and promote the NRM ideology.
In her address, Prime Minister Nabbanja praised the defectors for making what she described as a wise decision.
She reiterated that the NRM government is committed to lifting Ugandans out of poverty and ensuring inclusive development.
“The National Resistance Movement is the only government with a proven track record of fostering peace, development, and poverty alleviation,” Nabbanja said.
She also appealed to the people of Kitgum Municipality and the wider district to vote for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the 2026 general elections, citing his visionary leadership and efforts to stabilize peace in the region.
The Prime Minister noted that those who crossed over to the NRM had witnessed the tangible benefits of the ruling party’s policies, including wealth creation programs, peace initiatives, and equitable leadership opportunities.
Nabbanja concluded by announcing that she would present the defectors’ FDC cards to President Museveni during the upcoming cabinet meeting.
She urged residents of Kitgum to embrace government programs as a pathway to prosperity.
