Police in Mbarara have launched a manhunt for five suspects who escaped from Ruti Police Station on Sunday night at around 10:00 PM, according to Robert Kanusu, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Mbarara City South.
Kanusu says that the suspects, who were facing charges of aggravated robbery, fled under unclear circumstances. During efforts to re-arrest the escapees, police officer reportedly shot and killed Gordon Bogere, a businessman from Kibaya Cell, Nyakayojo Ward, who had come to the station to bring in a new suspect.
Kanusu revealed that the escapees had previously broken out of lawful custody in Kabale District before being rearrested in Mbarara, where they were allegedly involved in cattle and motor vehicle theft.
Kanusu says that the police officer involved in the fatal shooting is currently in custody at Ruti Police Station pending further investigations.
