The Uganda Police Force has intensified operations against the persistent vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Mukono District following a rise in criminal incidents that have disrupted power supply and caused significant financial losses to the government.
According to police, the affected areas of Kisoga, Kigombya, Wantoni, and Kauga have recently experienced repeated cases involving the cutting and theft of Aerial Bundled Cables (ABCs), as well as the destruction of electricity installations.
In a targeted intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of June 5, 2026, police officers intercepted suspected vandals believed to be behind the theft of electricity infrastructure.
The operation, carried out at approximately 3:00 a.m., involved an ambush mounted along a suspected exit route in Kigombya Cell, Namumira Ward, Central Division in Mukono Municipality, as the suspects attempted to move towards Wantoni Town.
During the operation, police intercepted three suspects, although one managed to escape. Two suspects were arrested and identified as Mubiru Ronny, 25, a driver, and Kyadondo Jamir, 21, a boda boda rider.
Police also recovered a motorcycle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime, along with exhibits including a roll of stolen ABC cable. The recovered items are currently being held as evidence.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the criminal network and to apprehend the suspect who remains at large.
The Uganda Police Force has urged members of the public to support efforts aimed at eliminating electricity infrastructure vandalism by promptly reporting suspicious activities around electricity poles, transformers, substations, and power lines to nearby police stations or local council leaders.
Police also warned the public against purchasing or dealing in suspected stolen electrical materials such as ABC cables, transformers, and related equipment, noting that offenders risk prosecution for possession of suspected stolen property.
Residents and local leaders, especially in Kisoga, Kigombya, Wantoni, and Kauga, have been encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies and officials from Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) by providing timely information that may lead to arrests and the recovery of stolen infrastructure.
Police emphasized that vandalism of electricity infrastructure not only constitutes a criminal offence but also poses serious risks to public safety, disrupts essential services, and undermines national development.
The Uganda Police Force reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to protect critical infrastructure and ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply across the country.
Speaking on the matter, Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said security agencies remain determined to bring perpetrators of electricity vandalism to justice.
