Security authorities have raised a red flag over escalating political tensions in Ndorwa West Constituency, Kabale District, identifying it as a potential hotspot for electoral violence during the ongoing campaign period.
The concern was raised during a high-level joint security and coordination meeting held Tuesday at the Kabale District Boardroom, chaired by Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Christopher Aine. The meeting brought together police officials, electoral stakeholders, and parliamentary aspirants amid growing reports of intimidation and sabotage.
Ndorwa West MP aspirant, Counsel Eliab Naturinda Mporera, voiced serious concerns about threats to free and fair campaigning. He claimed that two of his supporters were assaulted on Monday in Mukitengye Village and accused the LC3 Chairperson of Butanda Sub-county, Barnet Champion, of defacing his campaign posters.
Echoing his concerns, Andrew Baryayanga Ajja, an aspirant for the Kabale Municipality seat, noted a rise in the destruction of campaign materials. He cited the tearing down of posters belonging to his political rival, Michael Turyamureeba Byamungu, by unknown individuals.
Responding to the claims, Kabale District Police Commander, Superintendent Charles Okello, confirmed the area had been flagged by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for increased surveillance.
District Internal Security Officer, Capt. Robert Tukundane, emphasized the need for candidates and their supporters to uphold political maturity, refrain from hate speech and engage in issue-based campaigning. Deputy RDC Christopher Aine warned that hooliganism, intimidation, and vandalism would not be tolerated.
