The Ndorwa West Member of Parliament Eliab Naturinda Mporera has rallied residents in Kigezi to embrace the government’s monthly community cleaning campaign and take greater responsibility for keeping their communities clean.
Naturinda said residents should actively participate in general cleaning exercises, including the maintenance of community access roads under the Bulungi Bwansi initiative.
He made the call on Sunday while speaking at the burial of Namara Vincent and Nasiima Natasha at Kabirago Village in Rubaya Sub-county, Kabale District.
The two young people died in a motorcycle accident after the motorcycle they were travelling on reportedly developed brake failure. Each of them left behind two children.
The MP described their deaths as a painful loss and condoled with the bereaved families. He donated one goat to each family to help support the children left behind.
Naturinda’s call followed the launch of the national cleanliness campaign by Vice President Maj (Rtd) Jessica Rose Epel Alupo on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni on Saturday.
The campaign encourages communities to dedicate the last week of every month to general cleaning and environmental conservation.
Naturinda also urged residents to participate peacefully in the LC1 elections scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
“My fellow brothers and sisters, let us embrace peaceful elections. We are one community, and we should freely choose leaders of our choice while maintaining peace,” he said.
He also cautioned religious leaders against using the election period to promote division among residents.
“Church leaders, I urge you not to divide the people. These residents live together, eat together, and should continue living as brothers and sisters,” Naturinda said.
The LCII Chairperson of Rwanyena Parish, Jackson Byarugaba, comforted the bereaved families and called for unity during the difficult period.
Byarugaba also appealed to government leaders to address persistent water shortages and poor road infrastructure affecting the area.
The Parish Priest of Kitooma Parish, Rev. Palm Ainebyoona, encouraged Christians to remain firm in their faith despite the challenges they face.
“Even Jesus Christ experienced suffering. You are not alone; challenges are part of life. Remain faithful and persistent in prayer,” he said.
