The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has swept all positions in the Women Council elections held in Kirembe Cell, Central Division, Kasese Municipality, defeating the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
NRM flagbearer Teddy Itungo Nyamusimba polled 214 votes against FDC’s Esther Bbiira, who garnered 137 votes.
The ruling party also defeated the opposition in Railway Cell, Kidodo Ward, where its flagbearers secured 159 votes against FDC’s 137.
Hon. Jane Alisemera Babiiha, the Commissioner of the NRM Electoral Commission and Rwenzori Sub-region Coordinator, welcomed the results, saying the victories demonstrated growing support for the ruling party in the region.
“The residents voted NRM in full view of the general public and NRM took all the positions. This stamps the NRM support, having swept parliamentary and local government elections,” Alisemera said.
She said the elected leaders would work with the government to improve service delivery through programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and skilling initiatives.
“This victory is good for us as NRM and we shall work with the chosen leaders to extend better services to the people through government interventions like the Parish Development Model, Emyooga and skilling, among others. I am very hopeful that we shall score highly in the rest of the cells in the district, with over 80 per cent,” she said.
Alisemera urged residents in the Rwenzori Sub-region to turn up in large numbers next Tuesday to vote for NRM flagbearers in the LC I village chairperson elections.
Hon. Sarah Itunga Masereka, the Kasese District Woman Member of Parliament, said the NRM victories in the Women Council elections were evidence of the party’s growing support in the district.
“We are very excited about winning in Kasese, including areas well known as opposition strongholds,” Masereka said.
She added that she was eager to work with the newly elected women leaders to improve service delivery in their communities.
The newly elected Kirembe Cell Women Council chairperson, Teddy Itungo Nyamusimba, pledged to work with other leaders to promote the transformation and development of the area.
