KAMPALA: The President of the National Unity Platform, Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi, has taken a decisive step by suspending Honorable Mathias Mpuuga, the Commissioner of Parliament, from his position as Deputy President (Central Region). This move comes amidst allegations of corruption and abuse of office leveled against Mpuuga, a former Leader of the Opposition.
It’s alleged that Mpuuga, along with other NRM Parliamentary Commissioners, indulged in corrupt practices by improperly allocating themselves a sum of 1.7 billion shillings under the pretense of “Service Awards” during a meeting chaired by the Speaker of Parliament, Ms. Anita Among. However, Mpuuga has vehemently denied these accusations, branding them as false and a distortion of facts. He maintains that the amount he received (Shs500M) was rightfully granted as gratuity, emphasizing his innocence.
Addressing the allegations, Mpuuga asserted that the functions of the Parliamentary Commission are clearly defined by law and involve collective decision-making. He condemned any attempts to portray these decisions as personal actions aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
Despite facing these challenges, Mpuuga has declared his intention to remain within the National Unity Platform (NUP) and spearhead reforms aimed at making the party a credible alternative for governance. He outlined a vision for the NUP, emphasizing the need to eradicate practices such as corruption, nepotism, and abuse of office.
In a statement filled with resolve, Mpuuga denied any wrongdoing, firmly rejecting the accusations leveled against him. He called for a focus on mature resolution mechanisms within the party rather than engaging in political grandstanding that could damage the reputations of comrades.
The recent events have left a bruise on NUP leaders and members, prompting Mpuuga to advocate for the restoration of public trust in the party’s ability to lead Uganda towards change and transformation.
However, Mpuuga declined to comment on the party leadership’s decision to recall him from the Parliamentary Commission through a letter sent to the House Speaker, Anita Among.
In response to Mpuuga’s stance, Bobi Wine expressed dissatisfaction with Mpuuga’s explanations regarding the allegations, suggesting that further clarification is needed.
