President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has authorised the resumption of Nation Media Group (NMG) operations in Uganda, ending a period during which the regional media company’s activities in the country had been suspended.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Tanzania-based Taifa Group, the majority shareholder of Nation Media Group through its subsidiary, Taarifa Limited. The company described the decision as a significant milestone for regional investment, media development and East African integration.
Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Azizi expressed gratitude to President Museveni for authorising the resumption of operations and thanked the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his support during the engagements that culminated in the decision.
Azizi said the company remains committed to Uganda’s socio-economic development through responsible investment, long-term partnerships and sustainable value creation. He added that Taifa Group fully supports Nation Media Group’s commitment to fair, balanced, independent and responsible journalism that informs, educates and contributes positively to public discourse.
He further noted that the decision demonstrates the value of dialogue, mutual respect and regional cooperation, adding that Taifa Group will continue investing in opportunities that create jobs, strengthen institutions and promote shared prosperity across East Africa.
Nation Media Group Chairman Joe Muganda welcomed the development, saying the company would now focus on rebuilding its presence in Uganda, reconnecting with audiences, employees, commercial partners and communities.
Muganda said the group’s immediate priority would be restoring its platforms responsibly, strengthening local content and providing Ugandans with credible, relevant and innovative journalism across print, broadcast and digital channels. He added that the company would leverage its regional experience to support a resilient media industry while creating opportunities for talent, enterprise and public engagement.
According to the statement, the resumption of operations reflects the enduring relationship between Uganda and Tanzania, as well as the broader commitment of East African governments and the private sector to promote regional integration, cross-border investment and economic cooperation.
Taifa Group said it would continue working with governments, institutions, businesses and communities across the region to expand sustainable economic opportunities and support East Africa’s long-term prosperity.
Nation Media Group operates newspapers, television, radio and digital platforms across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda and says it remains committed to editorial independence, integrity, fairness and professionalism.
