KAMPALA: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged Shs 50 million to support Rev. Fr. Dr. Narcisio Bagumisiriza in establishing a cultural centre in Kashambya Sub-county, Rukiga District.

The centre aims to preserve and promote Kiga culture and broader African cultural values.

The President’s pledge was delivered by the Minister of State for General Duties, Hon. Henry Musasizi, who represented him as the Guest of Honour at the launch of Rev. Fr. Dr. Bagumisiriza’s new book, Customary and Christian Marriages Compared, held on Friday evening at Christ the King Church in Kampala.

In addition to delivering the President’s message, Minister Musasizi personally contributed Shs 5 million towards the initiative.

He congratulated Rev. Fr. Dr. Bagumisiriza for his contribution to the promotion of marriage and African cultural values through the book.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Minister Musasizi underscored the importance of the book in encouraging the preservation of family values and warned against the growing influence of homosexuality, which he described as a threat to both family life and personal character.

“This book aligns with President Museveni’s call to uphold and protect African cultural values,” Musasizi said, praising the author for his boldness and clarity in addressing critical social issues.

He also called upon the Church to intensify its teaching of Christian principles, especially among young people in schools.

The book urges individuals in customary marriages to seek Church blessings for their unions, highlighting the spiritual importance of the sacrament.

In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Dr. Bagumisiriza emphasized that the book serves as an evangelization tool, particularly for those who refrain from receiving the Holy Eucharist due to unblessed marriages.

“Jesus Christ elevated marriage, customary marriage included to the level of a sacrament. Therefore, Christian marriage is marriage par excellence. Anyone in a customary marriage should seek the Church’s blessing,” he said.

He posed a reflective question to the audience: “How many of our friends, relatives, men and women, young and old, are living in marriage unions that have not been presented to the Church for blessing?”

Rev. Fr. Bagumisiriza noted that the book dedicates an entire chapter to this topic and also includes a strong message against homosexuality.

“Homosexuality poses a real danger to the family, weakens people’s character, and dehumanizes society,” he added.

He expressed gratitude to President Museveni for recognizing the relevance of the book and for sending Minister Musasizi to represent him at the launch.
