President Museveni to Address Nation on Independence Day Theme

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is scheduled to address the nation today, covering the Independence Day theme and various national issues.

The confirmation of his address comes from the Presidential Press Unit (PPU), and the speech will be broadcast live on all radio and television stations at 8:00 PM.

In an official statement, the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) announced, “The Presidential Press Unit (PPU) wishes to inform the general public that His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. (Rtd). Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will deliver a national address on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at 8 PM.”

The statement emphasized that the focus of the address will be on the Independence Day theme and other crucial national matters. The public is encouraged to tune in to the live broadcast on all radio and TV stations.

The National celebrations for the 61st Independence Day will be hosted by Kitgum District in Acholi sub-region, Northern Uganda, under the theme “Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation, Taking charge of our Future as a free nation.”

President Museveni is anticipated to be the chief guest at the event.

Reflecting on the significance of Independence Day in Uganda, the statement mentions that it is a state holiday celebrated annually on October 9, commemorating Uganda’s liberation from the United Kingdom in 1962.

The region had been under British rule as a protectorate since 1894, with the UK establishing administrative control over the territory.

 Uganda achieved independence on October 9, 1962. The post-independence period has been marked by notable events, including violent conflicts, such as the eight-year-long military dictatorship led by Idi Amin.
