Police in Rukungiri District are investigating two separate incidents involving the death of a 10-year-old boy in an alleged suicide by hanging and the murder of an unidentified man whose body was discovered in eucalyptus trees in Kebisoni Town Council.
According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Maate Elly, the suicide incident involved 10-year-old Gumisiriza Benedicto, a pupil at Mutariga Primary School and a resident of Nyamubogore Cell, Nyeibingo Parish in Kebisoni Sub-county.
Maate said the incident happened on Friday, at around 9:00pm. He revealed that earlier in the day at about 2:00pm, the deceased locked the door of his room from inside before passing through the window and disappearing to an unknown location.
He reportedly returned home at around 7:30pm, where his mother, Kentaro Evelyn, questioned him about his whereabouts. Instead of responding, the boy allegedly ran away again to an unknown place.
Later that night, his elder sister, Nduhukire Ruth, reportedly discovered him hanging on a coffee plant using a banana fiber. The matter was immediately reported to police.
Police officers led by the District Police Commander visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from witnesses and later handed over the body to relatives for burial as investigations continue.
In a separate incident, police in Kebisoni Town Council are hunting for unknown assailants linked to the murder of an unidentified male adult whose body was discovered on Saturday, at about 8:25 AM in eucalyptus trees located in Bishop Ruhindi Cell, Central Ward.
The body was reportedly discovered by Kamagara Medard, a teacher at Kebisoni Integrated Primary School, while grazing goats near the area.
Kamagara informed the area chairperson, Tumuhairwe Julius, a teacher at Bishop Ruhindi Kebisoni High School, who later alerted the GISO of Kebisoni Town Council before police officers from Kebisoni Police Station and CPS Rukungiri responded to the scene.
Maate said the deceased, believed to be about 32 years old, was dressed in a red undergarment and a greenish T-shirt with yellow spots, while a black trouser was found beside the body.
The scene was processed and documented before the body was taken to Buyanja Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination and identification.
Maate appealed to members of the public who could be missing a relative matching the description to visit the mortuary for identification and burial arrangements.
He urged anyone with information that could help in the investigations to cooperate with police so that those responsible are brought to justice.
