Rtd Gen Kayihura Urges UPDF Leaders to Prioritize Political Education for Soldiers’ Patriotism

KAMPALA – The retired General Kale Kayihura, who once served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Uganda, has challenged the current senior leaders of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) to prioritize equipping UPDF soldiers with political education to ensure their unwavering patriotism.

Drawing inspiration from the wise words of the legendary revolutionary leader and former President of Mozambique, Samora Machel, Rtd. Gen. Kayihura emphasized that a soldier without political education is akin to a mercenary that may lack the critical attribute of caution and operates without the passionate commitment that comes from a deeper understanding of the political landscape.

This message was delivered during a retirement speech, which Rtd. Gen. Kayihura delivered at the State House on behalf of his fellow retirees yesterday. In his address, he underscored the need for the UPDF to constantly evolve and reinvent itself to remain relevant, adapt to changing times, and foster growth and development. He firmly asserted that the older generation must gracefully yield to the younger, which are better equipped with the knowledge and tools of the advancing era of science and technology.

General Mbasu Mbandi, the Chief of Defence Forces in Uganda, added his voice to the discourse on retirement. He stressed that preparing for an honorable retirement is a shared responsibility and holds biblical significance, as the older generation must inevitably make way for the younger. General Mbandi also expressed concern about the substantial backlog of pending retirements and the impact this backlog has on career progression within the UPDF.
