Police in Kisoro District have arrested two Rwandan nationals accused of impersonating as ‘Prophets’ to fraudulently obtain money from residents.
The suspects were identified as Mutuyomana Fols, 35, a film actor with Ejo Heza from Gatarara Village in Musanze District, and Mpakaniye Jelome, 34, an electrician from Gakyenye Village in Nemba Parish. Their arrest followed separate complaints filed by victims who claimed to have been duped under the guise of spiritual prophecies.
According to police reports, on July 23, 2025, the suspects contacted Moreen Okanyereka, an employee at Olexy Petrol Station in Kisoro, pretending to be her sister “Judith” from Mutorele Parish under Kabale Diocese. Claiming to have received a divine revelation about Moreen, they engaged her in prayer sessions over the phone and later invited her to Kisoro Catholic Church Parish.
Convinced by their spiritual pretense, Moreen reportedly sent UGX 800,000 to the duo. It was only after the transaction that she realized she had been conned. She reported the incident to Kisoro Central Police Station, seeking justice.
In a similar incident on August 5, George Nteziyaremye, a resident of Rubuguri Town Council in Bukimbiri County, received a call from the same suspects. They instructed him to bring UGX 400,000 and a bottle of water to Shaaza Playground, directing him to leave them in a public toilet for supposed “spiritual cleansing and blessings.”
Suspicious of the instructions, George placed the money at the location but stayed nearby to monitor. Shortly after, he saw three men approaching the toilet. He alerted a police officer nearby, and together they pursued and arrested the suspects, including Mutuyomana and Mpakaniye.
The suspects, however, denied the allegations, claiming that Mutuyomana had only traveled to Uganda to visit his friend. They further alleged that confusion may have arisen after they borrowed a phone while crossing through Chanika border. They also claimed to have felt unwell and sought treatment at Shaaza Health Center III, where police eventually arrested them.
ASP Boaz Arinaitwe, the Community Liaison Officer at Kisoro Central Police Station, confirmed the arrest and condemned the acts, describing such fraudulent schemes as a growing “monotonous trend” in the region. He stated that the suspects are currently charged with theft and remain in custody pending further investigations.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals using religious or spiritual claims to solicit money.
