One suspected armed robber was put out of action after police officers foiled a robbery attack in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala, during a midnight patrol operation on Monday.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred at about 12:50 a.m. on June 23, 2026, when a businessman and his wife were walking along Mukasa Road. The couple was reportedly intercepted by three armed men who ordered them to stop and lie down.
The suspects allegedly robbed the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint before turning their attention to his wife and demanding her phone.
However, the robbery was interrupted when police officers conducting routine motorcycle patrols in the area arrived at the scene.
Upon spotting the officers, the suspects fled, abandoning a bag containing suspected stolen property and a rifle. Police immediately launched a pursuit of the fleeing men.
During the operation, one unidentified male suspect, believed to be about 25 years old, was put out of action. The other suspects managed to escape and remain at large.
SP Kawala said that Police recovered several exhibits from the scene, including a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to have been stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, an empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.
“The body of the deceased suspect was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, while investigations are ongoing to identify him and track down his accomplices”. She said.
She commended the patrol officers for their swift response, noting that their intervention prevented further harm to the victims and led to the recovery of suspected stolen property.
She asked members of the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
