Three houses belonging to the Kabale District Local Government have been demolished as authorities commence the full enforcement of the Trade Order in Kabale Municipality.

In February 2026, the government started implementing the Trade Order by removing vendors from walkways, road reserves, and other unauthorized public spaces, while also targeting buildings constructed without approved physical plans or those declared unfit for occupation.

In April this year, Kabale Municipal authorities identified structures earmarked for demolition and marked them with the letter “X,” directing owners to voluntarily demolish them before the enforcement exercise commenced.

The houses, built on Kabale District plot number 39 along Bwankosa Road, were among several structures in Kabale town marked with the letter “X.” Unlike in other cities and municipalities across the country where enforcement was implemented immediately, authorities in Kabale had taken a lenient approach, giving residents ample time to voluntarily demolish the marked structures or seek alternative arrangements.

The demolished houses had been occupied by former district staff who retired from civil service. However, the buildings had reportedly been condemned as unfit for human habitation.

Sources indicate that when both the District and Kabale Municipal Council passed resolutions to sell off some plots, the Municipality proceeded with the sales while the District did not. Former tenants are said to have requested priority in purchasing the district-owned plots, but the District reportedly never finalized the sale process.
