KAMPALA – The Uganda Police Force has taken the decision to suspend the National Unity Platform Party’s nationwide mobilization activities until further notice.
This suspension, as detailed in a press release dated September 13th, 2023, and signed by Deputy Inspector of Police Maj Gen Tumusiime Katsigazi, comes in response to the breach of established guidelines governing the conduct of these activities across the country.
The police have outlined a set of regulations which National Unity Platform was required to adhere to under the law. These regulations included obtaining permission from venue owners, conducting gatherings in town halls or suitable enclosed spaces, refraining from processions, and avoiding any actions that could incite violence.
Maj Gen Tumusiime Katsigazi emphasized that the National Unity Platform leadership had disregarded and violated these guidelines, prompting the police to take action.
Furthermore, he pointed out a specific incident that occurred in Kasana, Luwero, where the President of the National Unity Platform utilized a mobilization activity as a platform to incite violence, promote sectarianism, call for the removal of an elected government, and make defamatory statements against President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In light of these concerns, the Deputy Inspector General of Police has issued a directive to immediately suspend all National Unity Platform mobilization activities. This suspension will remain in effect until the party demonstrates a willingness to comply with the established guidelines and adhere to the rule of law.
