The Diocese of Kigezi has suspended iron ore mining activities on the Rwanshunju land belonging to St. John’s Church of Uganda Parish in Upper Bugongi, Northern Division, Kabale Municipality.

The decision follows concerns raised by Christians over alleged unauthorized iron ore exploration activities by Tera Industrial Development Company on church land.

On May 11, 2026, the company was issued a seven-day ultimatum to halt operations and remove its iron ore exploration equipment from the disputed land in Rwanshunju Cell, Northern Division, Kabale Municipality.

The directive was issued during an impromptu meeting held at St. John’s Church of Uganda Parish and chaired by environmental police officials following protests by Christians on the evening of May 10. Congregants reportedly blocked the Chinese-owned company from commencing exploration works, arguing that the activities had started without the knowledge or consent of church members and leaders.

He added that after the exploration phase, any company interested in mining iron ore on the church land will be required to apply through the Bishop, who is the legal trustee of the land.
