Kigezi HomeBoyz Football Club have mutually terminated their contract with head coach Mutyaba Joseph Harold following the team’s poor start to the Uganda Premier League season.
Sources close to the club told our reporter that the decision to part ways with Mutyaba followed the team’s 3-0 defeat to Sports Club Villa at Mutesa II Wankulukuku Stadium on September 15, 2026.
In June, Kigezi HomeBoyz appointed the vastly experienced Ugandan tactician on a two-year contract.
Mutyaba arrived at the club with a coaching résumé spanning more than two decades, having managed several clubs in Ugandan football, including Soltilo Bright Stars, Tooro United, Onduparaka, Entebbe, Lweza and Masavu, as well as Malindi Sports Club in Zanzibar.
His coaching achievements include guiding Lweza to promotion to the Regional League, leading Kabale Good Samaritan FC to the FUFA Big League and helping BUL FC improve their league standing during his time as an assistant coach.
The Gorillas currently sit 16th in the 18-team league after three matches, having picked up one point from a draw and suffered two defeats. They have scored one goal and conceded five.
Coach Kefa Kisala has since assumed the role of head coach following the mutual termination of Mutyaba’s contract.
Kisala has travelled with the team to Hoima, where they will face Kitara FC at Hoima City Stadium on Wednesday at 4pm.
In a match preview, Kisala said his players are mentally and physically prepared for the Uganda Premier League clash.
The coach said the two-week international break gave the team enough time to recover from their disappointing defeat to SC Villa and prepare for the demanding away fixture.
“We had a long international break, and between our last game and today, we had a bad result against SC Villa. It was a blessing to have the two weeks because we have prepared enough,” Kisala said.
He said the team travelled to Hoima two days before the match to allow the players to recover from the long journey from Kigezi and concentrate on preparations.
Kisala acknowledged that Kitara will enjoy an advantage from playing in front of their home supporters but challenged his players to remain mentally strong.
“We know they have the support behind them, but we have to be mentally tougher. We have prepared our players for the hostility and the big crowd,” he said.
The two sides enter the encounter seeking crucial points early in the season, with Kisala saying HomeBoyz cannot afford to drop more points.
He said the players have been reminded that Kitara have two points while HomeBoyz have one, making the fixture an important opportunity for the Gorillas to begin collecting maximum points.
Kisala also warned his players about Kitara’s experience, noting that their opponents have spent about three years in the top flight and have players with considerably more Uganda Premier League experience.
“Kitara have players who have been in the UPL for about 10 years. That gives them an advantage over us, but we are also in the UPL and we have to start winning,” he said.
The coach expects Kitara to adopt an aggressive, high-pressing approach but insisted that HomeBoyz will stick to their game plan and manage the match over the 90 minutes.
He also played down the significance of the previous meeting between the clubs, saying past results would have no bearing on Wednesday’s encounter.
Kisala said the team used the international break to improve its style of play, with a recent friendly match giving him confidence in the players’ progress.
“We had a friendly game and you could see that there is some good football the players are playing. I believe we are going to see a different type of game,” he said.
With Kitara preparing for continental action, Kisala believes defeating a more experienced side would be a significant achievement for HomeBoyz.
He also urged travelling supporters from Kigezi to make the long journey safely and promised that the team would fight together to reward them with a positive result.
“Travelling from Kabale to Hoima is a long way. To the fans coming to support Kigezi, please be together and reach well. We shall try to fight together as a team to give them positive results,” Kisala said.
