KABALE – Security has been significantly bolstered in Kabale district and its surrounding areas to ensure the safety of students participating in the ongoing Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games II Championship, amid heightened terror threats to Uganda.
The prestigious Secondary School National Ball Games II Championship, hosted by St Mary’s College Rushorooza in Kabale Municipality, commenced today and is slated to conclude on July 17th, 2023.
This annual event brings together schools from across the country, engaging in a wide array of sports disciplines such as Football U14/U16, Netball, Athletics and Cross Country, Handball, Basketball 3×3, Wood Ball, Volleyball, Dance Sport, Rugby 7s, Football U14, Beach Soccer, Lacrosse, and Beach Volleyball.
To ensure the safety of the participants and more than 1,000 officials, Kabale’s Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma, who also serves as the head of security in the district, has taken extensive measures.
He states that the championship has drawn over 6,000 participants and anticipates the official opening ceremony, to be held on Wednesday, to be presided over by the State Minister of Education for Sports, Peter Ogwang.
Nyakahuma explains that a joint deployment of police and UPDF officers has been implemented to secure the residences of the participants and officials, as well as to patrol all sports venues hosting the events. Additionally, they have bolstered their intelligence network and established procedures for recording and accrediting business personnel offering services, thus minimizing the risk of unauthorized entry.
