KABALE: Sports have always been revered for their ability to unite individuals and communities. Beyond mere physical activity, sports foster social cohesion, cultural exchange, and national pride.
In today’s increasingly divided world, sports serve as a common ground where diverse groups can come together, cultivate tolerance, and celebrate shared values.
Mr. Andrew Agaba, Manager of Voice of Kigezi FM in Kabale District, underscores the role of sports in promoting unity by facilitating social interaction and building relationships across diverse backgrounds.
He emphasizes that when individuals from different communities or cultures participate in sports, they create opportunities for interaction, communication, and connection.

“These interactions break down barriers such as prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination, fostering a sense of belonging and social integration. Through shared experiences, sports enable individuals to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of different cultures, contributing to unity among diverse groups,” Mr. Agaba explains.
Job Namanya, the chairperson of the Kigezi Media tournament, sees engaging in sports activities as a means for journalists to advocate for their rights and promote development within the media fraternity.
Kigezi Regional Media Tournament.
The upcoming Kigezi Regional Media Tournament, scheduled for May 3, 2024, coincides with the World Press Freedom Day celebrations in Kabale municipality.
According to Namanya, the tournament aims to bring together media practitioners from Kisoro, Kanungu, Rukiga, Rubanda, Rukungiri, and Kabale to foster unity among them and to establish their umbrella body.

As part of the pre-tournament activities on March 2, 2024, the Kabale Media Fraternity and Kisoro United Journalists Association engaged in a friendly football match at the Kisoro Saaza grounds. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, with Kabale Media emerging victorious in the penalty shootout with a 4-3 score.
Namanya remarks, “Football matches will be a novel experience for media practitioners in the region. We are paving the way for the Kigezi regional tournament through these friendly games.”

Vanansio Kakogoso and Adonia Zatuha, journalists based in Kisoro District, commend the initiative for fostering solidarity within the regional media landscape.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on May 3, focuses on the theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.” The theme underscores the critical role of journalism and freedom of expression in addressing global environmental challenges.
