KABALE: Health experts in Kabale District are deeply concerned about the rising consumption of artificial sugar-laden foods, which is leading to a surge in oral diseases.
This concern coincides with the global observance of World Oral Health Day, marked annually on March 20th. This year’s theme, “A Happy Mouth is A Happy Body,” underscores the pivotal role of oral health in overall well-being. It aims to heighten awareness of oral health’s significance and empower individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain good oral hygiene, thereby lessening the burden of oral diseases on individuals, healthcare systems, and economies.
In Uganda, the commemoration is being hosted by Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale District, located in the southwestern region of the country. As the world marks this day, Bonanza Ndyamuhakyi, a dentist at Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality, expresses grave concern over the escalating incidence of oral diseases, posing a significant risk to the lives of Ugandans.
Ndyamuhakyi reveals that Rugarama Hospital receives an average of 70 to 100 outpatients with oral diseases every week, a troubling statistic. Most of these patients are youths under 35 years old. He advises the public to curb the consumption of artificial sugar-laden foods and prioritize regular medical check-ups and mouth hygiene practices to mitigate the prevalence of these diseases.
