Police in Kanungu District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a one-year and nine-month-old girl, Kato Pauline, daughter of Oudira Tushabahurira, a resident of Mushunga Cell, Kiringa Parish in Kambuga Sub County.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday at around 8:30 AM. Preliminary findings indicate that on Friday, the toddler was at the home of a neighbor, identified as Sunday Fauster (the suspect), where she was playing in the compound. When her mother later went to pick her up, she allegedly found the child drinking a liquid substance from a bottle, while the suspect looked on.
Shortly after returning home, the child began experiencing medical complications. She was rushed to Kambuga Hospital and later referred to Bwindi Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Sunday.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed that the case was reported on Monday by the mother. Police visited and documented the scene, and recovered a white bottle containing a foul-smelling substance, which was taken as evidence.
A postmortem was conducted at Kambuga Hospital, and some body organs were extracted for further analysis by the Government Analytical Laboratory (GAL).
Maate further revealed that the suspect was attacked by a mob but was rescued by police. He is currently admitted at Kambuga Hospital under police guard as investigations continue.
