President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has lauded the Catholic Church for its unwavering commitment to addressing both the spiritual and socio-economic needs of Ugandans.
Delivering the President’s message at a fundraising event for the construction of the Kasese Diocese Cathedral in Kasese Municipality, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa emphasized the vital role faith-based institutions play in promoting national development alongside spiritual nourishment.
President Museveni commended Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira and the faithful for their resilience and dedication toward completing the cathedral, despite earlier setbacks.
He also recognized Kasese Diocese for its significant contribution to the health sector, particularly through the operation of St. Mary’s Hospital, which has filled the void left by the destruction of Kilembe Mines Hospital during the floods.
“Beyond spiritual work, we must embrace enterprise, in agriculture, industry, services, and ICT, as a key to fighting poverty and transforming our communities,” the President urged.
He reminded Christians that even Jesus Christ combined spiritual leadership with practical work, such as healing, feeding, and carpentry.
In his own remarks, Deputy Speaker Tayebwa praised Bishop Kibira for consistently preaching unity, a message he said is essential for community wellbeing, especially as the country approaches the election season.
He called on Christians to reject divisive politics based on religion or ethnicity.
“In any leadership position, we need leaders who serve all Ugandans, regardless of religion or tribe,” Tayebwa said.
