The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has cautioned parliamentary aspirants against organizing processions and rallies ahead of the nomination exercise scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday.
Speaking to journalists from the South Western region during a one-day training workshop on election reporting at Hotel Triangle in Mbarara City on Tuesday, EC Spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi reminded candidates that processions and rallies before nomination are prohibited by law.
He said that the nomination period is strictly for verification and submission of documents saying that Processions and rallies will only be permitted after the Electoral Commission officially announces the campaign period.
He, however, noted that aspirants are free to meet their supporters and celebrate modestly after a successful nomination, provided they do so within the confines of the law. Mucunguzi added that security agencies have been directed to enforce compliance and prevent unauthorized gatherings.

The workshop, organized by the Electoral Commission in partnership with African Center for Media Excellence (ACME), brought together senior editors and newsroom managers from across the region to enhance responsible election reporting. According to Robert Beine, the Regional Election Officer, the initiative aims to promote accuracy, professionalism, and public trust in the electoral process amid concerns about misinformation and sensational coverage.
Mucunguzi also urged journalists to use their platforms to challenge falsehoods and promote issue-based reporting, especially during campaign periods when candidates may spread misleading claims.
