The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have completed the construction of a new canvas bridge linking Nyakarambi to Kangondo in Rukiga District, significantly improving safety and access for local residents.
Speaking after the completion of the project, Maj. Alex Muhwezi, a member of the UPDF coordinating team in Rukiga, confirmed that the structure was finished within just two weeks. He said the new bridge replaces a temporary timber structure that had become unreliable, especially during the rainy season.
“We found a temporary timber bridge, which we replaced with a canvas bridge in two weeks, and we hope it will effectively serve the purpose for which it was constructed,” Maj. Muhwezi said.
He highlighted the importance of the project, noting that the previous bridge could not withstand strong water currents, often cutting off access and disrupting school activities. The situation had posed serious risks to learners crossing the river.
“We identified the needs of the area, and this initiative was aimed at supporting the movement of school-going children, especially after reports that two pupils had drowned while attempting to cross,” Maj. Muhwezi added.
Andrew Muhwezi and Eron Natumanya, both Senior One student at Kihanga Secondary School, shared their relief following the completion of the bridge. They said fear of drowning often forced them to stay home whenever it rained, affecting their studies.
“Whenever it rained, we feared crossing the river because of the risk of drowning like some of our colleagues. This bridge has given us confidence to attend school without fear,” they said, applauding the UPDF for the intervention.
Local residents have also welcomed the development. Gilbert Aruho, a resident of the area, said the bridge will boost business by easing the transportation of agricultural produce. He noted that the new structure has shortened travel distance for many residents from six kilometers to just one kilometer.
The UPDF Engineers Brigade is currently undertaking similar community support projects across the Kigezi sub-region, reinforcing its commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the welfare of local communities.
