The outgoing Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has said he will fully comply with any decision President Yoweri Museveni makes regarding his next political role, describing himself as a loyal cadre of the ruling National Resistance Movement.
Tayebwa made the remarks while speaking to journalists at Parliament shortly after taking oath as Ruhinda North MP on Friday. He was responding to questions about whether he intends to seek another term as Deputy Speaker in the 12th Parliament.
“I want to thank the President, who first gave me the opportunity to serve as Government Chief Whip and later promoted me to Deputy Speaker,” Tayebwa said. “As a true cadre of the party, my duty now is to wait for further instructions from him, and I will dutifully and fully comply with whatever guidance he gives.”
Tayebwa also defended the performance of the 11th Parliament, describing it as successful and impactful. He cited several key laws passed during its tenure, including the Petroleum Supply Amendment Act, which he said has strengthened Uganda’s fuel security.
“The performance has been excellent,” he said. “We supported government programmes and passed critical legislation. A good example is the Petroleum Supply Amendment Bill, which enhanced fuel supply security in the country. We also passed the Organ Donation and Transplant Law, which now enables Ugandans to undergo critical surgeries locally instead of travelling abroad.”
He expressed optimism that the 12th Parliament would build on the achievements of its predecessor.
Looking ahead, Tayebwa said the next Parliament should prioritise the fight against corruption at all levels and accelerate the implementation of free universal education.
“In the 12th Parliament, we must focus on fully implementing free universal education, which the President is championing,” he said. “We must also intensify the fight against corruption, not only at the top but at every level. If leaders deliver on these priorities and other national mandates, I believe the country will prosper.”
