The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, has asked the Government of Uganda to intensify the fight against corruption and extend investigations beyond the former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, saying corruption is widespread among officials in both high and lower offices.

Bishop Asiimwe made the remarks during his sermon at the installation service of Rev. Canon George Bazahuuza as the Archdeacon of Buhunga Archdeaconry in North Kigezi Diocese on Sunday. He commended the government’s efforts in combating corruption but emphasized that accountability should not be selective.

“Do not stop at Hon. Anita Among because there are many corrupt people in higher and lower offices,” Bishop Asiimwe said, calling for a sustained and comprehensive approach in addressing graft.

Bishop Asiimwe also urged Christians to repent for the misuse of public funds, saying spiritual renewal is essential for people to be filled with the Holy Spirit. He noted that President Yoweri Museveni had declared the current term one of zero tolerance for corruption and pledged the Church’s support in advancing the anti-corruption agenda.

Bishop Asiimwe further challenged church leaders to be guided by the Holy Spirit and to embrace obedience, noting that leadership requires integrity and discipline.

“A leader who is not obedient will experience disobedience from the people they lead,” he said, adding that the Holy Spirit acts as a guide and warning signal against wrongdoing, and those disobedient individuals should not occupy leadership positions.
