Police in Rubanda District are investigating the murder of a 52-year-old security guard attached to Muko High School, who was allegedly attacked and killed by unknown assailants in Muko Sub-county.
The deceased, identified as Fred Mbabazi, was an askari at Muko High School and a resident of Habutobere Village, Butare Parish, Muko Sub-county in Rubanda District. His body was discovered on the morning of May 28, 2026, near the kitchen of Muko Butare Primary School.
According to preliminary police findings, Mbabazi had supper at the school staff dining room on the night of May 27 before preparing for his routine night duty. At around 10:00 p.m., he reportedly went to dress for work in a room shared by fellow security guards, identified as Frank Birungi and Frank Aharimpisa.
Police said Birungi, who was with the deceased at the time, last saw Mbabazi after he dressed and left for duty at the lower section of the school. However, it remained unclear whether he reached his designated work station.
His lifeless body was later discovered at about 7:00 a.m. by a teacher at Muko Butare Primary School, who immediately alerted colleagues before the matter was reported to Muko Police Station.
Police officers visited and documented the crime scene, recovered exhibits of evidential value and recorded statements from witnesses as investigations commenced.
Police revealed that the deceased sustained severe injuries, including deep cuts on the left side of the head and a stab wound near the left eye, suggesting a violent attack.
The Rubanda District Police Commander, SP John Bosco Tumwebaze, also conducted community policing in the area, urging residents to strengthen neighbourhood watch efforts, promptly report suspicious incidents to police and preserve crime scenes to aid investigations.
The body was later handed over to relatives for burial arrangements as police continue efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
