24 Injured, Majority Congolese Nationals in Kisoro Accident.

KISORO – A total of 24 passengers, mostly Congolese nationals, sustained injuries in an accident on the Kabale – Kisoro road in Kisoro District.

The incident involved a black Toyota Hiace with registration number UBG 645E, driven by Batumbya Dan, a 46-year-old resident of Kigombya village in Gulu ward, Mukono district.

The accident occurred at 08:00 AM on August 25, 2023, at Kibande village in Muhindura parish, Kanaba sub county, Kisoro district.

The victims included Congolese refugees from the Rwamwanja refugee camp and Ugandan residents.

The injured individuals are identified as Bahati Faustine (36), Bizimana Nfamushobora (38), Pascazia Ntawindurindi (42), Muhimbo Oliver (17), Shirimpuwe Kadodo (47), Faraha Sifu (21), Eriranze Sofia (33), Habyarimana Ntaugirawe (36), Nsekera Budoma (38), Olivia Emerance (27), Nyirasinunvayo Marensi (50), Mukarukundo Merive (38), Kinamubanze Gistanve (42), Nzabakurikiza Ntegeimisi (41), and Hakizimana Luke (32), all Congolese refugees at Rwamwanja refuge camp in Kamwengye District.

Other victims include Nyakaranbi Olivia (40), and Mukamutara Veneranda (38), who are residents of Muramba Sub county in Kisoro district, as well as the driver, six unidentified juveniles, and the motor vehicle driver (UBG 645E).

Reportedly, the vehicle was en route from Rwamwanja refugee camp to Kisoro with 17 adult passengers, six juveniles, and three Ugandans, when it failed to negotiate a corner and overturned on the right side of the road at Kibande village, Muhindura parish, Kanaba sub county.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, mentioned that Asp Kushaba Micheal and his team visited the scene.

The injured were transported to Mutolere and Kisoro hospitals using ambulances and a Kisoro police patrol car (UP 7644).

The vehicle involved was towed to Kisoro CPS for IOV inspection.

The accident’s cause was attributed to the driver’s reckless driving and over-speeding.
