Police in Kabale are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a boda boda rider along the Kabale-Katuna Road on Sunday night.
The crash occurred at about 11pm at Mwanjari when a Toyota Premio, registration number UAT 791S, collided with a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEV 857H.
According to preliminary police findings, both vehicles were travelling from Kabale towards Katuna when the crash occurred.
The motorcycle rider died instantly, police said.
Kigezi Region police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Premio was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
“The driver is in police custody to help with investigations,” SP Tumushime said in a statement issued on Monday.
Police have warned motorists and boda boda riders against drink-driving, saying traffic operations targeting drunk drivers will be intensified across the region.
The police said motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol will be arrested, subjected to breathalyser tests and prosecuted in accordance with traffic laws.
“We shall arrest and prosecute offenders of traffic rules and regulations,” SP Tumushime said.
Police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased rider.
