Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, stated that the suspects are currently detained at Rukiga Central Police Station for allegedly killing Ndyomugabe Ambrose, a resident of Kakiiri Village, Kitanga Parish, Kashambya Sub County.
According to Maate, on Saturday, November 2, 2024, Ndyomugabe left his home for Kashumuluzo trading center to drink, as was his habit.
“He typically returned home for lunch, but this time his wife waited for him in vain. Witnesses reported that he was seen at the trading center, making noise while intoxicated, and one suspect was seen assaulting him with a stick. Locals intervened and warned the assailant to stop”. Maate said.
Maate noted that the suspects were observed with the deceased at the bar until around 11:00 PM, when a passerby named Tumuhimbise discovered Ndyomugabe lying alongside the footpath in a pool of blood.
Tumuhimbise immediately contacted the deceased’s brother, Turyasingura Bosco, via phone call, who then alerted other locals. Upon arriving at the scene, they confirmed the situation and informed Rukiga Central Police Station.
Maate revealed that a team of police officers responded promptly, processed and documented the scene, and recorded statements from relevant witnesses.
He noted that the five suspects were subsequently arrested to assist police with their investigations as the body was taken to Mparo Health Center IV for a postmortem and was later handed over to the relatives for a decent burial.
