Police in Kisoro District are investigating two separate suspected suicide cases involving a 33-year-old man and an 80-year-old man.
In the first incident, police identified the deceased as Mbonyebyombi Brian, 33, a resident of Chahi Village in Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality.
According to police, on September 6 at about 10am, Mbonyebyombi returned home allegedly drunk and asked his wife to serve him food. After some time, his wife went to their bedroom and found him hanging from a rope.
Police said the deceased was believed to have made several previous suicide attempts, particularly after consuming excessive alcohol.
In a separate incident, police are investigating the death of Ndagijimana Andrew, 80, a resident of Mataramba Village, Gisozi Parish, Muramba Sub-county, Kisoro District.
Police said on September 5 at about 7am, Mr Ndagijimana’s wife, Nyirayanze Tereza, left him at home and crossed into the Democratic Republic of Congo to cultivate her land.
She returned at about 7pm and found the house locked from inside. After failing to open the door, she called neighbours, who broke it open and found Mr Ndagijimana’s body hanging from a rope.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime urged members of the public experiencing stress, depression or financial difficulties to seek help from professional counsellors, religious leaders or trusted friends.
He also cautioned the public against taking their own lives and encouraged families and communities to support people experiencing emotional or psychological distress.
