Police in Kanungu District have arrested a 37-year-old man, Turinawe Philimon, on allegations of murdering his wife, Turinawe Jacenta, aged 40, following a domestic quarrel.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on the night of October 9, 2025, at Rumba Cell, Western Ward in Kanungu Town Council.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had been cohabiting at Jacenta’s home after she separated from her first husband, with whom she had five children. On the fateful night, the two reportedly developed a misunderstanding before going to bed.
While Jacenta was asleep, Philimon allegedly picked an axe from their kitchen and struck her several times on the head, killing her instantly.
Maate said the suspect later handed himself over to police on Thursday morning.
He said that Police officers led by the District Police Commander, SP Azira, visited and documented the scene, recovered an axe believed to have been used in the murder, found hidden under a bed in the children’s room and recorded statements from key witnesses.
He noted that the body of the deceased was taken to Katate Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.
He revealed that the couple had a history of domestic violence, and police are continuing investigations to establish the exact motive behind the killing.
